The time to think stops once you enter the room

The thought process is hugely important to the actor as far as your preparation before. The dissection of the script is crucial so you can believe everything you say. However, when you enter the room it is time to play, live and experience and thinking as the actor about your choices takes away from that.

Pick up the Pace!

How crucial pacing is in the audition room these days and how to make it happen!!!

Casting Directors are always saying “pick up the pace”.
These days T.V. shows are faster paced than ever and actors need to acknowledge that in the room.
But I don’t tell my actors to “pick up the pace” or ” be faster”.
instead, think of this.
If you don’t NEED to have this conversation, then we don’t NEED to watch it.
TV writers always create situations with human beings in NEED of something.
Understand in your heart, not your head what this need is and why it exists in you as a human being.
Define what makes this urgent to you and that will create a locomotive that is driving you through the whole conversation.
And as a result we will have……pacing!

Actors who are interesting, fun dynamic people tend to become likened to drying paint when they are asked to talk about themselves or their career by a casting agent, agent or manager.
It’s not as important what you say.What makes a difference is how you say it.
When talking about you, they want to see your personality, your passion and what makes you unique.
All too often, that is a huge deciding fact in who they hire.

I started working with Annie at the very beginning of my career and she gave me a lot of the tools to create an honest character and performance as well as the confidence to know that I can do this. I always felt I was free and safe to fall on my face over and over again until I gained the courage to be free and in the moment with the character we were creating. She was a big champ in my corner. I think having positive and constructive support like that in the early days of your career are vital to your growth as an actor.

After auditioning in Los Angeles for many years, I thought I was pretty good at it. And then I started coaching with Annie. The difference is night and day! Before starting with Annie, i was always nervous about auditioning. After only a few classes, i already noticed a difference. My whole approach to auditioning was different. She gave me some great techniques and constructive feedback, which gave me the confidence to walk into a casting room and not think about anything but the character. I very rarely used to get call backs, but after working with Annie, i would get called back on almost every audition i went on. I have audited a number of classes and nothing compared to the realism of Annie’s. Its so practical and gives you all the tools you need in order to book the job. The best and most sincere endorsement that I can give Annie Grindlay is the simple truth: I recently booked a series regular role on SPARTACUS: Blood and Sand, a guest star spot on CHUCK and the lead in the web series THE RESISTANCE and in my honest opinion a large part of this is due to the confidence, training and guidance which she has given me. Through her classes I learned how to quickly see the writers intention for a character, envision the life surrounding the scene, how to add in my own unique personality and finally bring that world to life. Making an impact during pilot season

After speaking with a number of casting directors over the past few weeks, it has become apparent that actors auditioning for new pilots REALLY need to stand out in the room.
If you’re not a TV name or a studio pick, the only way you won’t fall to the wayside is to be BOLD.
Strong, creative, interesting and often riskey choices are the key.
Remember, you are an artist!!!
Do what you do best.
Be creative!

Unfortunately I can’t wave my arms and jump up and down and say “Dude!” “Dude!” “Amazing!” over and over again in a written testimonial…but, frankly, that would be the most honest testimonial I could give.
